I did buy a fresh wreath for the door, and set up my mother's nativity scene.

I've been to American Orthodox, Russian Orthodox and Greek Orthodox services. They remind me that the rituals, the acknowledging the unknown and unknowable power of the universe, can be a deeply satisfying experience. Raised Protestant, it is a lively contrast, and usually a good one. I know more than one person who left the Roman Catholic Church after the liturgy was no longer in Latin. They needed that. And I hear a few churches have one service a week in Latin, acknowledging that need.

I am pleased to note that most people are not going back to fuel-hogging cars since the fuel price dropped. I hope this means a tiny bit of wisdom has finally sunk in -- and that we are one step on our way to being a people who know what really matters.

And it's not the 60 inch TV or tires four feet tall.Katharine Eliska Kimbrielhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15195060585728465093noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5329139329489259389.post-41623421365063115412009-01-07T10:15:00.000-06:002009-01-07T10:15:00.000-06:00How does one celebrate the Circumcision of Christ ...How does one celebrate the Circumcision of Christ - I'm not sure, except the word "circumcision," which kind of stands out even in a long reverberating chant, came up something like ten times over the course of three hours.Alexis Glynn Latnerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12528810739353921130noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5329139329489259389.post-21477878942014963282009-01-07T09:31:00.000-06:002009-01-07T09:31:00.000-06:00What a great read, Alexis. It's always amused me how Houston seems to get so much more snow (relatively speaking, of course) than us here on the edge of the Hill Country, even though your winters are significantly warmer (again, relatively speaking) than ours.

I've always wanted to go to an Orthodox service. Never managed it. Of course, I've always wanted to attend a Latin high mass as well, since growing up Catholic you can't avoid hearing the stories from the folks (who can still recite all the Latin by memory, even if they don't have a clue what it means).

And a Catholic party wouldn't have wine on the tables, either.
